“The Space Whale” is the first blackprint edition signed by Jean-Luc Grossmann and is an accurate representation of the artist’s love and interest in the world.
In this edition, one can easily recognize the photographer’s spirit of adventure and openness to self-exploration and connection with nature. His respectful and caring approach creates visually striking images that reveal stories unknown to most of us. They encourage people not only to be curious and explore the world but also to do it with consideration and empathy towards remote cultures and natural environments.
“I love to discover foreign cultures around the globe and feel just at home in the desert as I do in ice fields. I continue to explore all facets of travel and adventure photography, encouraging others to discover the world around them and to be curious about the new and the unknown.” – Jean-Luc Grossmann
Taken in 2016 at Burning Man Black Rock City, Nevada, USA, the photograph in this edition shows a group of ’burners’ on bikes in the dust looking at a full scale humpback whale made of steel and stained glass. The composition is carefully centered on proportions and shapes, silhouettes and contours. Therefore, the black and white aesthetic fits perfectly and enhances the atmosphere of the photograph. The use of natural materials for printing and framing completes the story.
The photographer reveals the reality of our world and raises awareness of themes that would otherwise be outside our reach subtly and playfully. The viewer feels part of the story but, at the same time, perceives the rift between people and nature
